Year 5 & 6 Science Incursions

Six incursions for upper primary. These are the sessions with real circuits, real reactions and real data, pitched at students ready to run an investigation properly before they hit secondary school.

$490 + GST per program, flat. No per-student fees. Bookings have a 2-session minimum.

What Year 5 and Year 6 science looks like with us

In the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, Year 5 and Year 6 Science share a single Levels 5 to 6 band of content descriptions and one achievement standard at the end of it. A Year 5 class and a Year 6 class are working on the same body of content, so the same incursion serves both, and combined 5/6 classes need no special arrangement.

This band is where the equipment gets serious. Students build and test circuits, then compare energy sources: chemical energy from batteries and mechanical energy from a hand-crank generator they turn themselves. In Light they use diffraction gratings, lenses and UV-reactive materials to observe dispersion, magnification and ultraviolet light. In Reactive Chemistry they investigate states of matter with super-absorbent polymers and put precise language on the difference between a physical and a chemical change.

The Earth and space sessions place students in a bigger frame. Earth in Space locates our planet in the solar system, follows how light travels across that distance, and explains what the atmosphere does to keep life here possible. Natural Disasters covers the geological processes behind earthquakes, volcanoes and the rest.

Each program page lists the exact content descriptions covered, along with duration, group size and cost. If you are running a science week or a transition unit, say so in your enquiry and we can sequence a couple of sessions.

Curriculum coverage

The distinct Victorian Curriculum v2.0 content descriptions addressed across the programs on this page.

  • VC2S6U09Identify materials as electrical conductors or insulators and use this knowledge to build open and closed circuits
  • VC2S6U08Investigate how light is reflected by flat, convex and concave mirrors, and refracted when it passes between materials of different density
  • VC2S6U04Distinguish reversible from irreversible chemical changes using observable evidence including colour change, gas production and temperature change
  • VC2S6U07Explain how gravity keeps Earth and other planets in orbit around the Sun, and model orbital motion using a funnel and ping-pong ball
  • VC2S6U06Investigate how convection currents in water and air drive weather systems and contribute to cyclones, tornadoes and storms
  • VC2S6U05Explain how natural disasters are driven by rapid geological or meteorological processes, and discuss how human responses can reduce their impact
  • VCDSCD039Apply a systematic engineering design process — design, build, test, evaluate, iterate — to a series of structural and mechanical challenges
  • VCDSCD038Justify material and structural choices using evidence from testing, including earthquake resistance and bridge load capacity
  • VCDSCD040Measure catapult performance against defined criteria, identify structural failure points, and implement evidence-based design improvements
  • VCDSCD041Negotiate and apply criteria for success for each challenge, then judge the finished design against them

Physical Sciences

Electricity

Students build working circuits, classify conductors and insulators, compare series and parallel configurations, and investigate how different energy sources (including hand-powered generators) produce electricity.

LightYear 5–6

Physical Sciences

Light

Students investigate reflection, refraction and diffraction using mirrors, lenses and diffraction gratings, with laser beam demonstrations bringing the physics of light into sharp, visible focus.

Reactive ChemistryYear 5–6

Chemical Sciences

Reactive Chemistry

Students investigate reversible and irreversible chemical change through real reactions: a polymer reversal, a sealed reaction bag and a teacher-led Elephant's Toothpaste demonstration.

Earth in SpaceYear 5–6

Earth and Space Sciences

Earth in Space

Students model Earth's axial tilt, seasons and orbital motion at scale, explore the solar system and the speed of light, and launch Alka-Seltzer water rockets to connect forces to space travel.

Natural DisastersYear 5–6

Earth and Space Sciences

Natural Disasters

Students model convection currents, tectonic plate movement, water erosion, underwater volcanic eruption and tornado formation, connecting each process to real-world natural disasters.

Common questions

Can you work with mixed year levels?
Yes. We regularly run combined classes (e.g. Year 3/4). Tell us your year range in the enquiry and we'll pitch and pace accordingly.
What happens before and after the incursion?
Once booked, we send a confirmation with arrival details and space requirements so your class is ready to go. On the day our facilitator arrives early, sets up, runs the session and packs everything away.
What's included in the cost?
Programs are $490 + GST per session, covering facilitator delivery, all materials and all consumables. There are no per-student fees. Bookings have a two-session minimum. Regional bookings may include a travel surcharge, which we'll confirm with you.
How far do you travel?
We cover metropolitan Melbourne with no travel fee. Regional Victoria is available — a travel surcharge applies based on distance and we'll confirm it in your quote.
