Earth and Space Sciences Incursions

Weather, water, the changing surface of the Earth, natural disasters and our place in space. Six incursions covering the Earth and Space Sciences strand of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, from Foundation through to Year 6.

What the Earth and Space Sciences strand actually covers

Earth and Space Sciences is the strand about the systems students live inside but rarely get to test: the weather, the water cycle, the ground under the school, and the movement of the Earth, Moon and Sun. The phenomena are far too big to bring into a classroom, which is why the strand is so often reduced to a diagram.

These sessions get around that with models students build and handle themselves. In the early years they measure hot and cold air and talk about how the weather changes what they do that day, test water samples for acid rain and pollution with a natural chemical indicator, and follow how water is used, transported and cleaned by people and by nature, and why fresh water is a limited resource.

In Year 3 and 4 the models turn astronomical. Students demonstrate how Earth's rotation on its axis causes day and night, orbit the Moon around the Earth by hand, and set out the relative positions of Earth, Moon and Sun that produce solar and lunar eclipses. A ping-pong ball circling a funnel stands in for orbital motion and the gravitational force holding the Moon in place. Our Changing Earth covers erosion and the reshaping of the surface itself.

By Year 5 and 6 students locate Earth within the solar system, follow how light travels through space, and explain how the atmosphere protects life here, then work through the geological processes behind earthquakes, volcanoes and other natural disasters. Students model day and night, the Moon's orbit and eclipses using globes and torches, investigate orbital motion hands-on with a funnel and ping-pong ball, and launch water rockets.

Students simulate mechanical and chemical weathering, model water erosion on a sugar cube landscape, build layered sedimentary rock from plasticine, and excavate fossil specimens as palaeontologists.

Students model Earth's axial tilt, seasons and orbital motion at scale, explore the solar system and the speed of light, and launch Alka-Seltzer water rockets to connect forces to space travel.

What's included in the cost?
Programs are $490 + GST per session, covering facilitator delivery, all materials and all consumables. There are no per-student fees. Bookings have a two-session minimum. Regional bookings may include a travel surcharge, which we'll confirm with you.
How far do you travel?
We cover metropolitan Melbourne with no travel fee. Regional Victoria is available — a travel surcharge applies based on distance and we'll confirm it in your quote.
Do you provide curriculum resources or lesson plans?
We don't provide lesson plans or take-home resources. What we do publish is the Victorian Curriculum v2.0 content descriptions each program addresses, listed on every program page, so you can map the session into your own planning.
