Foundation to Year 2 Science Incursions

Eight incursions for Foundation (Prep), Year 1 and Year 2. Each one is practical, paced for short attention spans, and mapped to the Foundation to Level 2 band of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

What Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 science looks like with us

In the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, Science content descriptions and achievement standards for Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 sit in a single Foundation to Level 2 band. A Prep class, a Year 1 class and a Year 2 class are working toward the same checkpoint, so the same incursion can be pitched up or down on the day. Mixed Foundation/1 and 1/2 classes are common. Tell us the spread when you enquire.

At this band the work is noticing and describing. Students test which materials and shapes float and connect what they see to predictions about sinking and floating. They classify materials as transparent, translucent or opaque and watch light travel in straight lines to make shadows. They sort and group materials by their properties and argue about why one material suits a job better than another. They separate mixtures with magnets and find that mixing baking soda and vinegar produces a change that cannot easily be undone.

The Earth and weather sessions work the same way. Students measure hot and cold air with a simple thermometer and talk about how the day's weather changes what they do. In Water they use a natural chemical indicator to test samples for acid rain and pollution, then follow how water is used, moved and cleaned by people and by nature, and why fresh water is a limited resource.

Common questions

Can you work with mixed year levels?
Yes. We regularly run combined classes (e.g. Year 3/4). Tell us your year range in the enquiry and we'll pitch and pace accordingly.
What if a student has a specific learning need?
Let us know in your enquiry. Our facilitators are experienced working with students who have ASD, ADHD, sensory needs and EAL backgrounds, and we can adapt pacing, grouping and materials accordingly.
What's included in the cost?
Programs are $490 + GST per session, covering facilitator delivery, all materials and all consumables. There are no per-student fees. Bookings have a two-session minimum. Regional bookings may include a travel surcharge, which we'll confirm with you.
How far in advance do we need to book?
We recommend booking at least four weeks ahead, especially for Term 3 and Term 4. We can often accommodate shorter notice — call us if you have a date in mind.
