What students will do
Students rotate through six guided investigations: comparing five mystery liquids in test tubes using sight, movement and sound to identify water; exploring kinetic sand and cotton sensory sand side by side; mixing baking soda, vinegar and detergent to observe a chemical reaction; transforming sodium polyacrylate into instant snow; using red cabbage water as a colour-change indicator with acidic and basic solutions; and separating iron filings from sand using magnets. Each activity is framed with a prediction before students investigate and then share their observations.
Curriculum outcomes
Victorian Curriculum v2.0 content descriptions addressed in this session.
- VC2S2U05
Use senses to observe and describe the properties of a range of liquids and solids, and compare them to identify an unknown substance
- VC2S2U05
Combine everyday materials and observe the changes that result, including colour change, gas production and new textures
Investigate how some materials can be separated — using magnets — and recognise that some changes, like mixing baking soda and vinegar, cannot easily be reversed
Often booked alongside

Physical Sciences
How Objects Move
Students roll differently shaped objects, race a balloon-powered car, drop parachutes, launch foam pump rockets, and test what sinks or floats, exploring how pushes and pulls drive every outcome.

Physical Sciences
Light & Sound
Students sort materials as transparent, translucent or opaque, feel vibrations with tuning forks, build a box guitar to explore pitch, and create shadows with a torch.

Chemical Sciences
Reactive Chemistry
Students investigate reversible and irreversible chemical change through real reactions: a polymer reversal, a sealed reaction bag and a teacher-led Elephant's Toothpaste demonstration.
