Bringing hands-on science into holiday programs and OSHC

A holiday program is not a school day with the uniform removed. The group spans five year levels, attendance is voluntary, the space is usually a hall rather than a classroom, and nobody is being assessed. Those conditions rule out a lot of standard classroom science and unlock some things a classroom can never do. Here is how the same practical activities get reshaped for out-of-school-hours settings, and what to look for when you are choosing a provider.

Mixed ages are a feature, not a problem

The instinct is to pitch to the middle and accept that the youngest are lost and the oldest are bored. A better approach is to choose activities with a low floor and a high ceiling: a task a five-year-old can complete successfully and an eleven-year-old can push much further.

Building a bridge from paddle pop sticks works this way. The younger children succeed by making something that stands up. The older ones start testing load, changing the joint design and arguing about triangles. Same activity, same materials, genuinely different work happening at each table.

No curriculum pressure means you can chase the wonder

In a classroom, an activity earns its place by mapping to a content description. In a holiday program it earns its place by being astonishing. That is a real freedom, and it is worth using: the dramatic reactions, the very large bubbles, the rocket that goes higher than anyone expected.

The learning still happens. Children ask why, and the answer given in that moment lands harder than the same explanation delivered on a Tuesday to a class that did not ask.

Designing for a hall, not a lab

Out-of-school settings rarely have sinks nearby, benches at the right height, or storage. Activities need to be self-contained, quick to reset between rotations, and tolerant of a floor that will get wet.

Rotation stations tend to work better than a single whole-group activity. Small groups cycling through four or five hands-on stations keeps energy productive, reduces waiting, and lets educators supervise a manageable number of children per activity.

What to ask a provider

Ask how they handle the age spread specifically, not in general terms. Ask what the session looks like if it rains and everyone is indoors. Ask what your educators are expected to do during the session, and what the reset between groups involves.

And ask for the risk assessment. Practical science in a hall full of mixed-age children is entirely safe when it has been thought through, and the presence of proper documentation is a good proxy for whether it has been.
