The fear that keeps some teachers away from practical science is reasonable: hands-on means higher energy, and higher energy can tip into chaos. But the chaos is almost always a structure problem rather than a behaviour problem. Get the structure right and the same energy that worried you becomes the engagement you wanted in the first place. The goal is not a quiet room. It is a focused one, where the noise is the sound of students arguing about whether their prediction was right. Here is how to build that.
Front-load the rules before the materials appear
The moment equipment lands on desks, attention goes straight to it, and any instructions given after that point are competing with curiosity and will usually lose. Set the expectations, the safety points and the task while hands are still empty and eyes are still on you. Only then distribute materials. This single ordering decision prevents most of the disorder that teachers tend to blame on the activity itself.
A useful habit to establish is a clear "hands off until I say go", treated as non-negotiable and practised before anything interesting is within reach. Once students know that the materials are not theirs to touch until the signal, you buy yourself the window you need to give instructions that actually get heard. The chaos people fear usually traces back to materials arriving before the rules did, and reversing that order solves most of it.
Give every student a defined job
Idle hands in a group of four is where trouble starts. A student with nothing to do for ninety seconds will find something to do, and it is rarely the science. Roles fix this: recorder, materials manager, reporter, timekeeper. When each student owns a specific part of the task, the off-task drift that comes from "nothing to do right now" largely disappears, because there is always a job attached to each pair of hands.
Rotate the roles across sessions so no student is permanently the scribe and no student is permanently in charge, which also quietly addresses equity within the group. The roles do more than occupy students. They distribute the work so that the confident child does not do everything while the others watch, which is both a behaviour benefit and a learning one. A well-assigned set of roles is one of the most reliable pieces of structure you can bring to a practical lesson.
Use a reset signal and practise it
Hands-on work needs a reliable way to pull the room back together quickly, because there will be moments when you need everyone's attention mid-activity. A countdown, a chime, a call-and-response: the specific signal matters less than the fact that it is practised when stakes are low so it is automatic when the room is buzzing. A class that has rehearsed the reset will stop on cue even with their hands in the middle of an experiment.
A class that has not rehearsed it will keep going while you raise your voice over the noise, which escalates rather than settles the room. The time spent practising the signal in a calm moment is repaid many times over in the heat of a lively session. This is one of those small investments in routine that looks unnecessary until the first time you genuinely need the room to stop, at which point it is the difference between a smooth pause and a shouting match.
Channel the energy, don't suppress it
The instinct to clamp down on excitement is usually counterproductive. The aim is not silence, it is focus, and those are different targets. Loud, on-task discussion about whether the prediction was right is exactly what you want from a practical lesson, even though it looks and sounds nothing like a silent worksheet. Trying to impose worksheet-quiet on a hands-on task fights the very thing that makes the task work.
The skill is learning to read the difference between productive buzz and genuine drift, and intervening only on the second. Productive buzz is loud but pointed at the task. Drift is loud and pointed at everything except the task. Once you can tell them apart, you stop policing the noise and start policing only the off-task noise, which is both less exhausting for you and less deflating for the students who were engaged in exactly the way you hoped.
When a facilitator is in the room, stay in the room
Behaviour during an incursion is a shared job, not a handover. The facilitator runs the science, and you hold the relationships, because you are the one who knows which student is about to lose focus and which pairing will spark. A quiet word from the familiar adult lands harder than anything a visitor can do, simply because the student answers to you and has all term to keep answering to you.
Teachers who step back during incursions, treating the visit as a break, often find behaviour slips, and it is easy to misread this as the facilitator being weak. Usually it is just that the person students are accountable to has left the field. The most settled incursions are the ones where the facilitator's authority over the activity and the teacher's authority over the relationships are both present and working together. Staying engaged is not micromanaging the visitor. It is doing the half of the job that is yours.
