"The kids loved it" is the lowest bar an incursion can clear, and it is also the wrong measure. The benefit of hands-on science is not that students enjoy it, though they do. The benefit is what enjoyment makes possible: attention held long enough for a concept to land, and a memory durable enough to survive until next term. When a school asks what it actually gets for the money, the honest answer is not a fun afternoon. It is a set of specific, defensible outcomes that text-based science struggles to produce. Here is where the value really sits, and how to tell whether you are getting it.
Engagement is the mechanism, not the outcome
It is easy to dismiss "engaging" as a soft word, the sort of thing that appears on every provider's flyer and means nothing. But attention is the gateway to everything that follows. A student who is mixing, measuring and observing is doing the cognitive work themselves rather than watching someone else do it. That active participation is the reason hands-on experiences are retained far longer than the equivalent content delivered by explanation alone. The body is involved, the stakes feel real, and the brain treats the episode as worth keeping.
The point worth making to a sceptical colleague is that the activity is not a reward bolted onto the learning. It is the learning. When a child feels the tug on a string in a food-web game, the concept of interdependence arrives through the hands before it arrives through the vocabulary, and it sticks precisely because of that order. Strip the activity out and you are left with the words, which are exactly the part students forget first.
It reaches the students your unit usually loses
Every class has students who switch off the moment a worksheet appears. It is tempting to read this as disinterest, but often these are not students who cannot do science. It builds scientific confidence in teachers, not just students
Many excellent primary teachers do not have a science background, and it is the practical side where that shows. Setting up a fair test, handling equipment, and managing the moment when an experiment does not behave as expected are all skills that take confidence, and confidence comes from having seen it done. Running a hands-on session alongside a facilitator is quiet, embedded professional development. Teachers watch how a question is framed, how a result that contradicts the prediction is treated as interesting rather than as a failure, and how the energy of a practical room is kept productive.
That confidence compounds across a year. Teachers who have watched a strong practical session run are noticeably more willing to attempt their own afterwards, which extends the value of a single incursion well past the day it happened. The session becomes a model, not just an event, and the modelling reaches every future lesson that teacher delivers.
It produces assessable evidence, not just memories
One benefit that rarely gets mentioned is that hands-on science generates observable thinking. Predictions, fair tests, and explanations are all things you can see and capture, which means a well-run session feeds your assessment file rather than sitting outside it. A photograph of student work, a short recorded explanation, or a kept prediction slip all count as evidence of curriculum coverage and of individual student understanding.
This reframes the cost. An incursion is not money spent on an experience you then have to justify with vibes. It is money spent on a lesson that simultaneously delivers content, engages the disengaged, and produces the documentation you would otherwise have to manufacture separately. Understood that way, it competes well against almost anything else in the budget line.
The benefit is realised in the follow-up, not the event
Here is the part most providers will not say out loud: a hands-on session delivers most of its value in the week after, not the hour during. The experience creates a shared reference point, the kind you can return to with a single phrase like "remember when the balloon expanded?", and that reference reactivates the whole concept instantly. Without follow-up, the memory decays into "the fun science day" and the concept underneath it fades within a fortnight.
This is why your own plan for the following week matters so much, and why a session you intend to pick up and continue is worth far more than one left to stand alone. The incursion is the spark. The classroom turns it into learning, and a good program is built with that division of labour in mind rather than pretending the hour does all the work by itself.
What to actually measure
If you want evidence rather than impressions, look for three things in the fortnight after a session. Are students using the correct vocabulary unprompted, in contexts you did not set up? Can they explain the concept to someone who was not there? And are the usually-disengaged students contributing more than they were before? Those three signals tell you whether an experience became learning, and they are far more honest than a smiley-face feedback form collected while the excitement is still in the room.
Decide on your measure before you book, not after. Naming the specific outcome you expect, then checking for it deliberately, is the difference between knowing a program works and merely hoping it did. It also gives you something concrete to take to a budget conversation, which is where the case for enrichment is usually won or lost.
