Transport Incursion (Foundation – 2)

Theme: Design & Technology – Engineering/Materials
Level: Foundation – 2
Students will investigate the way objects move on land, through water, and in the air.
They will explore design technologies used in different modes of transport including size, shape, push and pull forces, and movement.

Activities

  • Discuss prior knowledge of transport and classify based on land, water and air transport;
  • Observe a pictorial representation of the history of travel;
  • Investigate how changing the shape of a material affects its ability to float;
  • Observe and discuss a model that moves up and down in a column of water;
  • Explore methods used by ancient people to move heavy loads over land;
  • Investigate different wheel and axle configurations using model cars;
  • Observe and discuss the ways our recycled car can move;
  • Explore the pushing and pulling winds created by electric motors and propellers;
  • Observe and discuss a demonstration of a chemical powered rocket.
Take home activity

 

Make a basic straw rocket to investigate variables affecting movement.

  • Objects are made of materials that have observable properties (VCSSU044);
  • The way objects move depends on a variety of factors including their size and shape: a push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape (VCSSU048).
Design & Technology
  • Identify how people create familiar designed solutions and consider sustainability to meet personal and local community needs (VCDSTS013);
  • Explore how technologies use forces to create movement in designed solutions (VCDSTC014);
  • Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to create designed solutions (VCDSTC017);
