Flight Incursion (Levels 3 – 6)

Theme: Design & Technology – Engineering
Level: 3 – 6
Students will explore design technologies used in flight.
They will investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a flying object.

Activities

  • Identify things that fly;
  • Identify the differences between rockets and plane;
  • Identify forces in play during flight;
  • Test air pressure;
  • Make a simple rocket model and test thrust;
  • Change the shape of the rocket model to observe what happens to its flight path;
  • Students design their own simple flying machine and observe a number of variables that affect the flight path;
  • Explore how lowering the pressure can move objects;
  • Investigate the movement of a battery-operated propeller;
  • Launch a rubber stopper using chemical energy.
